Alegria at San Jose Stage

On Sunday, March 16, 1997, Casa de La Cultura Mexica will be presenting Alegria de San Jose in "Primavera Mexicana" at the San Jose Stage Theater on South First and Williams. The program will include music and dances from the western states Michoac‡n, Sinaloa, Nayarit and Jalisco. The second half of the show will be dedicated to showcasing the "history of the mariachi" with musical accompaniment provided by the fabulous Mariachi Azteca de Pato Diaz. Showtime is at 2:00 pm and tickets are available through the theater box office, (408) 283-7142.

AdSJ's Folklorico Dance Classes are in full swing at the American Musical Theatre Dance Studios. Alegria's objectives in offering classes are to provide an educational and nurturing environment for those who wish to study Mexican Folk Dance, to provide quality instruction at affordable rates and to train dancers for potential recruitment into the dance company. The classes are geared for beginning adults, educators and teens and will continue to be offered on Wednesday evenings. For more information, please call Maria Luisa at (510) 770-0535.

Young Audiences of San Jose has invited AdSJ onto their performance roster. This is significant for the company in that it allows us to share our passion for the dance and our culture with hundreds of school-aged children throughout Santa Clara County. We wish to thank the members of the audition panel who interviewed us and look forward to our season with Young Audiences.

Spotlight On . . ."

DeniseRose Torres started dancing at the tender age of five. In addition to training in ballet, flamenco and tap DeniseRose also twirled a mean baton. Together with her sister Patricia Salvador-Torres, they have directed Los Danzantes de Alegria since 1975. The company's latest claim to fame is in hosting the largest folklorico web-page on the Internet today. You can visit their site at http://www.alegria.org.

For the last fourteen years she has co-coordinated the His-panic Heritage performances for th‹e Oakland A's. Her work has brought together hundreds of dancers from throughout the state to fill the Oakland Coliseum in a whirl of color.

DeniseRose's other talents include: serving as an instructor for Alegria's classes, playing violin as a member of the Mariachi Workshop at San Jose State University, and excelling in artistic works using beads and sequins. She has worked as a dancer in the movies "A Walk in the Clouds" (grape-stomping scene) and "Jack" (leading the conga line). At last year's International Mariachi Festival in Tucson, Arizona she taught and partnered Disney World's Mickey Mouse (in full charro regalia) in el Son de La Negra.

DeniseRose also works for a living as a Contracting Officer for the United States General Services Administration.

Alegr’a de San JosŽ is proud to have her as a member and thanks her entire family for all of their support and kindness throughout ithe years.

Con El Permiso

(Pirecua from Michoacan)

Con el permiso de los se–ores
vienen cantando las guarecitas
Venimos a saludarles
con canciones muy bonitas
Muy humilditas,
las guarecitas
pero les traen
muchas florecitas
Alegres bailan y cantan
las canacuas y las cintas
Si dan permiso
sus personitas
para cantarles
unas pirecuas
Quieren bailar unos sones
y alegrar sus corazones
Traen mucho gusto
las guarecitas
porque lo vienen a saludarle
Porque le traen
sus canciones
y su corazon a darle
