  About the Company . . .

Alegría de San José was formed in the summer of 1994. Since it’s inception, San José’s youngest folklorico group has enjoyed immediate audience appeal and rave reviews. Members of the group helped organize the Folklorico-On-Wheels program of Danzantes Unidos and also performed with the statewide company of Danzantes Unidos de California. In addition, members have performed with Linda Ronstadt in her Spanish-language concerts. In 1995, Alegría de San José was chosen from among 120 auditioning groups to perform in the prestigious San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival. Members of the group also had the opportunity to work in the film "A Walk in the Clouds" with Anthony Quinn and Keanu Reeves (look for our dancers in the grape-stomping scene). In 1996, the company was presented during the Summer Downtown Arts Series sponsored by the City of San Jose and the Office of Cultural Affairs. Members of the group were also chosen to perform at the 1996 San Jose International Mariachi Festival with Mariachi Azteca. Currently, Alegría de San José is a member of the Young Audiences of San Jose roster.

Our Mission . . .

Alegría de San José is an expression of traditional Mexican folk culture. We are a performing company with a focus on music and dance and a strong commitment to professional quality and artistic excellence. In doing so, Alegría de San José provides an environment of enhanced self-esteem and cultural pride, both for its own artists and people of Mexican heritage. Our aim is to provide a forum for cultural exchange between the performing company and the audience in which both are enriched by the experience. We seek as well to be a resource to the community and a source of pride to our culture.

Alegría de San José strives to impact all levels of the artistic community, as well as the community at-large, by the breadth and beauty of its material. We seek to work in cooperation and collaboration with other art and community groups to foster an appreciation of the Mexican culture and to open it to broader cultural experiences.
