Description:   There is a book titled “The Man Who Set The Town Dancing”, which celebrates and honors the life and achievements of New Mexico’s beloved folklorico instructor, Jose Tena. It is based on the true-life dream of Jose to research, preserve and teach the original dances of Mexico. He is the founder and artistic director of his group in Las Cruces, Ballet Folklorico Tierra del Encanto. Jose Tena not only set his town dancing, but has also traveled from coast-to-coast, from Washington DC and Boston, MA, to Fresno and Sacramento, CA, giving folklorico workshops. He is the driving force behind the folklorico workshops at the annual Las Cruces International Mariachi Festival and has served on the board of the Asociacion Nacional de Grupos Folkloricos (ANGF). Most recently he was in California teaching at the Danzantes Unidos Festival 2002 in Sacramento and is a regular instructor at the San Jose International Mariachi Festival.

The book, written by Candice Stanford and illustrated by artist Flo Hosa Dougherty, artfully captures the energy and passion of this man. Ms. Stanford’s bilingual text is wonderfully appropriate for children of all ages and everyone will appreciate the movement in, and vibrancy of, the paintings by Ms. Hosa Dougherty. The 40-page book includes the sheet music and instructions for dancing four New Mexico dances: “La Indita”, “El Vals de Los Paños”, “El Vaquero” and “Las Cuadrillas”. There is even a short biography of Jose Tena and contact information.

This book is a fabulous tribute to a cultural treasure that has dedicated his life to folklorico and it is a “must have” for libraries everywhere. Please contact your local public and school libraries and put in your request for this book. The book is published by Clear Light Publishers, Santa Fe New Mexico and retails for $16.95.
